The opportunity to embark on a three-day communication course arose as a nerve-wracking but exciting prospect. The course was showcased as an opportunity to develop a wide range of skills, from presentations, public speaking, interviews, networking, engaging discussion, filmmaking, opportunities for grants and scholarships, together with learning about the effective use of social media.
With generous funding from The Morley Foundation and The Felix Cobbold Trust, the course ran by Susie Emmett from Green Shoots Productions, exceeded all expectations.
Colour the attention, point the energy
In an industry with a short supply of optimism at present, the need to effectively communicate and present ourselves based on first impressions is essential. As Susie put it, “Eyes are the window of communication.” We learnt that when walking into a room full of strangers, eye contact portrays confidence and creates a personal touch. Clarity and concise communication enhance mindfulness and fulfilment.
Gritty, not pretty
Don’t shy away from the unknown. Welcoming the unknown can be daunting, but the prospect of engaging with a wider community of people should be exciting! Removing the waffle for a more concise, clear, and balanced answer will leave the audience wanting more. Create a pop! Whether this is through imagery or writing. We learnt that being adaptable is essential to ensure composure when engaging with others.
Speech is personal, value perspective

We understood the important to direct a unique message which aligns with what each of us personally stands for, showing enthusiasm, enlightenment, and positivity. To gain initial mutual respect, a relationship must be established between both parties whether this be a customer, reader, videographer, room full of people. It is important to adapt to, encourage, connect with, and inspire an audience to convey a message effectively.
My thanks go out to the Susie, Patrick, TMAF and The Felix Cobbold Trust – their time and support has been invaluable. I left the course with a feeling of empowerment and insight to use the adopted skills to bridge the gap between agriculture and the public alongside the confidence to present myself with clarity, curiosity, passion, and mindfulness. I am the director of my story.
