As a farm, we feel we have a responsibility to keep farm water that leaves the farm clean and clear of soil.
The Norfolk Rivers Trust says a very high proportion of rivers in our county fail to meet the required quality standard. Problems in Broadland rivers’ catchments include turbidity (silt), high phosphate levels and some pesticides.
Rather than wait for legislation to make us take action, we decided to get on with developing and using on-farm measures.
Our Morley Clean Water measures are low-cost, effective and very satisfying.
Our top tips to improve your farm water management
- Map where water flows on, through and onwards from your land.
- Measure the turbidity (silt) level of farm water in run-off and ditches.
- Choose and use a variety of measures to slow the flow, and catch the silt with V-notch weirs and farm track cross drains.
