Throughout my professional career, giving presentations, facilitating meetings, and the subtle art of influence is something I’ve wanted to hone. This recognition led me to apply to the John Forrest Communications Training Award, not just to enhance my communication skills, but also to dig into the practical side of crafting clear and impactful messages that have depth and make a lasting impact. The course focused on the workings of effective communication, covering a spectrum of skills from delivering talks and presentations to facilitating discussions and developing media skills including TV and radio interviews.
Practical application
This hands-on course provided ample opportunities for practical application and ensured I stepped out of my comfort zone. Susie, our coach from Green Shoots Productions, provided brilliant feedback and gave me plenty of food for thought. A specific instance that stood out, was the emphasis on word choice and the importance of using varied and clear language to convey your message. Avoid corporate jargon and acronyms and steer clear of ambiguous terms that could dilute the intended message!
Communication styles
Being able to explore different communications tools has been really eye opening. The course has highlighted the importance of adapting to varied audiences, whether on-farm or presenting in meetings or at events. Try making it different – don’t be afraid of using a prop every now and again, you might stand out and your message sink in! The opportunity to learn new techniques and pick up new tips and tricks will, I have no doubt, prove invaluable in my ability to influence and communicate effectively throughout my career in agriculture going forward.
Become a storyteller
The John Forrest Communications Training Award has been an incredible experience, sharpening my approach and bringing a new appreciation of the importance of effecting communication. From captivating radio interviews to taking better photos, each aspect contributed to a more rounded understanding of effective messaging. Now armed with new skills to put into practice, I am not just a communicator; I am a storyteller (or so I keep telling myself).
