Ploughing through those nerves
I’ve always struggled to find the confidence to communicate to large audiences, especially to those within agriculture. The fear of “saying the wrong thing” has haunted me at times. The only way I’ve learnt to plough through those fears is to jump in headfirst and use the pressure to gain more confidence. Susie and Patrick have shared some incredible tips to overcome these nerves. From breathing exercises to body language techniques, these newly attained skills will help me to effectively communicate with clarity and finesse.
Deep breath in, slow breath out!
An intense communication bootcamp
Throughout the week we tackled several challenges such as presenting on PowerPoint, chairing conversations and giving radio/television interviews. Throughout these tasks Susie gave us all enlightening feedback. I particularly enjoyed the session in which we took turns chairing a discussion. It’s a real challenge to effectively steer a conversation whilst managing time limitations. It’s rewarding to see how these conversations flow and develop. It’s crucial that everyone has the time to express their opinions as well as challenge others. As a group these conversations and tasks really heled us to gain more confidence and we begun to learn more about each other.

Putting these new skills in to practice
In my role at Euston estate, we have cultivated lasting relationships with local schools. In partnership with our local primary school, we have formed interactive lessons that promote a real interest in the role our farm has within in the local community. The John Forrest award has provided me with the tools to improve the workshops and lessons we provide. Focusing on the use of props such as David’s square metre, containers of seed and the products those ingredients produce will help provide context to how we impact their everyday lives.
An empowering opportunity
The John Forrest communication course has left me in need of a recharge but highly motivated, precisely what I needed. The intense nature of this event catapults you into the world of meaningful conversation. Conquer those nerves, be the very best version of yourself and you shall reap all the rewards. I cannot thank Susie, Patrick, The John Forrest award as well as the Felix Cobbold trust enough in giving me this opportunity. Farming is the best job in the world, full of inspiring people and their stories. Its an honour to share these past three days with individuals who share those sentiments. I look forward to sharing our future aspirations and achievements with each other.
