When I first started my farming career, over 20 years ago, I didn’t fully understand the need to be a communicator. Fast forward and the now ‘grown up’ me, has realised the true value and skill that is good, clear communication and that is why I applied for the John Forrest Memorial Award Communications Skills Course.
From the moment I navigated my rattling farm truck through the gates of the imposing Madingley Hall, I knew the next three days were going to be special.
Breaking the ice
As the group assembled on a very cold January day, we were greeted by Susie Emmett of Green Shoots Productions, who was leading the course and her infectious enthusiasm soon wore off onto the group. As we went around the room, introducing another member of the group and being critiqued by Susie, it was soon apparent that the next three days were going to be intense, fast paced and fun! Patrick Harvey, Susie’s business partner, joined us from day 2, to throw us into the deep end of TV interviews while passing on his expertise on the technical aspects of digital presentations.
Learning life skills
During the course, we went through various communication scenarios, from TV and radio interviews, presentations, writing skills and photography and videoing. I truly underestimated the power of all these channels, but I came away with a new found appreciation of them all while hopefully honing the skills of body language, calming nerves and confidently presenting myself. I have discovered that putting yourself in an uncomfortable and unfamiliar situation and stepping outside of your comfort zone can be a hugely empowering experience and I have gone from finding an excuse not to do a talk, to wanting to do it and doing it well!

Inspiring the next generation
Having completed the course, it has given me the confidence and tool kit to go on to present to various groups; from farm discussion groups to school visits. I have gained valuable insights from experts on how to effectively connect, explain, and advocate for sustainable farming practices to visitors to the farm and hopefully I have brought back some of Susie’s energy to inspire the next generation of agriculturalist!
I would like to thank Susie and Patrick, The Felix Cobbald Trust, and The Morley Agricultural Foundation for giving me the opportunity to attend the course and I would highly recommend to anyone who wants to develop their communications skills to apply. I am also looking forward to catching up with the JFA class of 2025 to see how we have all put everything into practice.
